SAINT LOUIS, MO- In the first round of the AMC Conference Tournament, the Harris-Stowe Hornets faced William Woods University for the third time this season. After defeating them, twice in the regular season they faced the ultimate challenge tonight. They came through in the second half and ended their season with an 81-78 win and a trip to the Semifinal game on Friday.
Dwane Miner (SR/Gates County, NC) led the Hornets with 17 points. Altez Davis (SR/Danville, IL) was working both ends of the floor scoring 15 points and grabbing 17 rebounds while Deandre Clark (JR/Orange, VA) sank 5 free-throws and went for 13 points. Christian Wimbley (JR/St. Louis, MO) was the final Hornet to score in double-digits, picking up 12 points.
The Owl's DaShaun Stark led all scorers with 24 points. Brandon Vice picked up a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds while Brian Enriquez and Darrien Dickey chipped in 16 and 12 points, respectively.
Harris-Stowe started out fast, taking a 10-1 lead just five minutes into the first half.
William Woods made their silent comeback and cut the score to 17-16 after Vice drained a three from the corner.
Davis would score seven consecutive points to put the Hornets up 33-25. K'Ja Johnson (JR/Douglasville, GA) would add in a fast break lay-up to push their lead out to 10 with 3:19 remaining in the half.
The Owls would add three free-throws at the end of the half to cut their deficit to five going into the break.
Free-throws were the Hornets saving grace in the second half, making 15 in the final 20 minutes of play.
After Stark made back-to-back free-throws to get WWU within one, Wimbley came down the court and found Miner open on the left wing and gave HSSU a four point advantage.
Harris-Stowe would knock down five free-throws in the final 39 seconds of the game to take the 81-78 win.
HSSU finished the game shooting 38.4% from the field and 34.8% from behind the arc. The bench counted for 28 points and, as a team, they pulled down 49 rebounds.
With the win, Harris-Stowe moves to 21-10 for the year. They will be in Conway, AR this Friday to face off against the Mustangs of Central Baptist College in the AMC Conference Tournament Semifinals. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
