ST. LOUIS, MO- In the Hornets (2-3;1-2 AMC) 2017 home opener, HSSU dominated the Eagles for their first conference win of the season with a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-14, 25-23).

Miaya Peacock (SR/Champaign, Illinois ) lead the way with 16 kills on 35 attempts for a .314 average. Kiarra Herron (SR/Cahokia, Illinois) had herself a game with 10 kills on 16 attempts while senior setter, Kennedy Netters (SR/Peoria, Illinois ), had a game high 38 assists.

In the first game, HSSU took a 19-11 lead that forced a Williams Baptist timeout. WBC would make it to 15 points, while HSSU would end the set with a kill and service ace from Miaya Peacock and an Eagles error to go on to win 25-15.

Harris-Stowe would come back in the 2nd set to get a 12 point lead late in the game. Williams Baptist got 2 errors from the Hornets, but would not be able to stage a comeback as Peacock ended the set, again, with a kill for Harris-Stowe and for a 25-14 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Shelby Wallace and Audra Nailling lead the Eagles with 8 kills a piece. Kayla Winfrey had a team-high 10 assists while Molly Mingo was right behind her with 8.

The Eagles would come back in the 3rd set to challange the Hornets. After trading points the entire set, WBC and HSSU found themselves tied at 16-16. WBC would committ an error to give Harris-Stowe a 17-16 lead. HSSU would never trail in the set afterwards as HSSU got 4 kills and 3 service errors from their side to lift them to a 25-23 win.

The Hornets will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host the Lady Lions of Freed-Hardeman University. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
