PARAGOULD, AR- In the first tri-match of the season, the Harris-Stowe Hornets found themselves going 1-1 against Crowley's Ridge and Lane College to kick off the 2017 season.

In their first game against Crowley's Ridge, the Hornets recorded an astounding 60 kills with Miaya Peacock (SR/Champaign, Illinois ) slamming down 23 with Niya Jenkins (FR/Chicago, IL) right behind her with 14. Senior setter Kennedy Netters (SR/Peoria, Illinois ) dished out a game-high 2 assists while Jhameka Lambert-Gully (JR/Belleville, Illinois) lead all players with 22 digs.

After CRC took the first set 25-20, the Hornets came back for an exciting 2nd set. The Pioneers and Hornets traded points the entire game and found themselves tied at 25 a piece. After a CRC error and a service ace from Lambert-Gully, Harris-Stowetook the game by a final score of 27-25 and tied the match at 1-1.

The third set was much like the 2nd set; both teams found themselves tied at 25 each. After back-to-back kills from Jenkins and Peacock put HSSU up 27-26. Crowley's Ridge struck back with a kill from Pyeatt to tie the game 27 each. The game would end with a kill from Peacock and another ace from Lambert-Gully to end the game at 29-27 and take a 2-1 match lead.

The Pioneers came out in the 4th set ready to play. CRC lead the entire game and put down 11 kills in the game to win 25-22 and force a 5th set.

Errors haunted the Hornets in the 5th set as 12 were committed by HSSU. With those errors, CRC was able to use them to their advantage and take the 5th set 15-7 and the match 3-2.

 

In their second game of the day, Harris-Stowe lead in all aspects of the game. Jenkins, Peacock, and Thomas combined for 35 of the teams 52 kills while Netters handed out 41 of the teams 47 assists.

Peacock did it all this game as she had a game-high 20 digs. Netters picked up 16 herself while Adrianna Nelson (FR/Memphis, TN) tallied 12 as well.

Netters also added 4 service aces to her statline .

The Hornets will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Arkansas to kick off AMC play and face Central Baptist College on Friday and Lyon College on Saturday afternoon.
