ST. LOUIS, MO- In their first match of the 2017 season, the young HSSU team took complete control of the game, winning by a final score of 5-1.

The offense was no joke today as Harris-Stowe got off 33 shots during the 90 minutes with 15 of those being on goal. On the flip side, the defense did not allow St. Mary of the Woods a single shot in the 2nd half and limited them to only 3 the entire game.

After SMWC's Yadira Castellanos netted one in the 12', the Pomeroys' defense had a set back as a free ball rolled past the defense and goalie and into the net in the 27' to tie the game at 1-1.

Coming out of the half, the Hornets were fired up and sent 17 shots at SMWC's 2nd half goalie, Laura Taylor.

In the 53', Lizette Popoca (FR/Waukegan, Illinois ) dribbled her way into the box and found Victoria Sample (FR/St. Louis, Missouri ) cutting in from the end-line for the first official HSSU goal and assist of the season. Just 7 minutes later, SMWC's defense allowed another unforced goal to give Harris-Strowe a 3-1 lead.

The final 2 goals came just minutes apart in the 83' and 85'.

Yuliana Noyola Miranda (FR/Cancun, Quintana Mexico ) set up for a corner kick and found an open Kaitlyn Johnson (FR/Maryland Heights, Missouri ) who headed the ball past the Pomeroys' Laura Taylor to make it 4-1. Just over 2 minutes later, Lizette Popoca let one fly from 25 yards out and got it just high enough above the goalie's hands and into the top right corner of the net for the 5th and final goal of the game.

Yuliana Noyola Miranda lead the team today with 7 shots and 4 on goal. Lizette Popoca was right behind her with 6 shots while Victoria Sample fired off 4.

Goalkeeper Camila Chaves (FR/Bogota, Columbia) recorded 1 save on 2 shots today.

Harris-Stowe will be back in action next Friday and Saturday where they will travel to Trinity International University and Roosevelt University. Game times are set for 4:30 p.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
