This weekend the Harris-Stowe Baseball team won a key series against the William Woods University Owls to move into sole possession of fifth place in the American Midwest Conference standings.  The Hornets trail WWU by one game for fourth place with three weekends left in the regular season but now hold the tie breaker with the Owls.  Head Coach CJ Bilbrey on the series win, "This was a big series for our guys.  We had several guys have big moments for us and now we have to hope it gets us rolling.  We have three tough series left to finish the regular season but if we can stay focused for 25 innings each weekend then we can be a tough team for anyone to play."

 

Game 1: Won 7-6

Steven Kemp started for the Hornets.  Kemp allowed 6 runs in the first two innings before locking in for 5 shutout innings to allow the Hornets offense time to catch up.  Trailing 4-0 in the first inning Zach Jones hit a three run homerun to get the Hornets back into the game.  With the game tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth, Leobardo Saldivar Jr. hit an RBI double to centerfield to score Jones to take the lead 7-6. 

 

Game 2: Loss 10-8

Stephen Wells started for the Hornets and allowed 7 runs with some shaky defense behind him.  The Hornets outhit the Owls 15-12 but committed 5 errors.         Arsalaan Alvi, PJ Roberts and Rubiangleo Mingeli all had 3 hits.  Mingeli had a double and a homerun.  Roberts and Alvi each had 2 runs scored.

 

Game 3: Won 8-6

Senior left handed pitcher Dion Herron started for the Hornets and gave up 5 earned runs in 7 plus innings of work.  The Hornets trailed 4-0 against Owls starter Ryan Phillips before the bats came alive in the sixth inning.  Phillips entered the game undefeated in conference with a 0.63 era in AMC action.  Jared Corbett started the inning off with a base hit to centerfield.  Tyler Schatz was then hit by a pitch to make it runners on first and second and no outs.  Arsalaan Alvi then hit a double to leftfield to score Corbett.  PJ Roberts then had a hit to rightfield to score Schatz.  Tony Montano hit a sacrifice fly to score Alvi.  Dylan Yankle then came through with a 2 run homerun that cleared the bleachers in leftfield for a 5-4 Hornets lead.  The next batter Zach Jones again hit a homerun to take a 6-4 lead.  After the Owls tied the game the Hornets regained the lead after Yankle was hit with a pitch.  Brendan Claus who was running for Yankle scored on a triple off the bat of Jones as he hit a ball down the right field line.  Saldivar hit a single to score Jones.  Tyler Boles picked up the victory as he struck out the tying run to end the game.

  • Hornets rank 6th in the nation with a .356 batting average
