2016 was a year of growth for the Harris-Stowe State University Athletic Department.  There were many stories from performances on the field, the classroom, sportsmanship, and dedication.  The number 3 story of 2016 comes from the classroom as three teams were honored by the NAIA for their accomplishments in the classroom.  Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, and Women's Basketball all achieved over a 3.0 GPA.    

 

3 Teams Honored as NAIA Scholar Teams

HSSU Hornets - Mon, Jul. 25, 2016

Three Harris-Stowe athletic teams have been awarded by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for their efforts in the classroom during the 2015-2016 school year.  Women's Soccer, Women's Basketball, and Men's Soccer were all named NAIA Scholar Teams.  They are the first Harris-Stowe teams to be recognized by the NAIA since 2007, and the most teams ever to be recognized by the NAIA in one academic year. 

Women's Soccer lead the HSSU Athletic Department with a 3.15 GPA with Women's Basketball coming in just behind with a 3.14 GPA.  Soccer was the leader among in men's sports with a 3.12 GPA.  To receive the NAIA Scholar Team award, you must have a team GPA of 3.0 or better.

All seven athletic teams have seen improvement in the classroom this past season.  The Hornets had a record 47 American Midwest Conference Academic All-Conference selections and four student-athletes were awarded as Daktronics Scholar Athletes.
